April 26, 1984. Stanmore, on the north-west edge of London. A light appeared in the night sky and stayed. Police officers from Harrow watched it for hours. PC Richard Milthorp saw a circular craft with a dome on top and another below, covered in flashing lights of blue, green, white and pink. It moved erratically, up and down and to and fro. Then it released a ball of light that shot towards the ground. The officers tried to photograph it. The pictures did not come out. They followed it by car towards the M1. It was already fading. The RAF said no aircraft were up.
Stanmore sits in the London Borough of Harrow, on the north-west fringe of the capital. Bentley Priory, the former headquarters of RAF Fighter Command, lies about two kilometres away. Just over the border in Hertfordshire is Bushey. On the night of 26 April 1984, police officers from the Harrow area and at least one civilian looked up and found something they could not name.
