November 18, 1993. 10:15 pm. Two residents of Sasolburg, Messrs du Plessis and Venter, watched a craft arrive from the direction of Vereeniging. It looked like a water droplet. Then it was gone in a flash, towards Parys. About three minutes later, it came back. Now individual lights could be made out. The body looked like a cigar, wrapped in a yellowish to orange glow. A blue light shone straight down. Then the craft left once more, in a flash, upwards. Two months later, a man in a nearby town found marks in the ground. He took them for the landing gear of a small craft.
Sasolburg sits in the Free State, then the Orange Free State, in South Africa. In November 1993 the Afrikaans daily Beeld carried a short report by Bruce Taylor under the headline "Vreemde ding in lug bo SA dorp". Strange thing in sky above SA town. It is the earliest account of the case, and almost everything known about that night comes from summaries of it.
