September 25, 1965. About 10 p.m. on US Highway 80 near Rodeo, New Mexico. Dr. George Walton, a physical chemist, was driving through the desert dark with his wife. Two round white objects appeared near the base of a mountain. Side by side. On a course that crossed the road ahead. They came closer. Then they lit up the inside of the car. The lights stayed with the couple, 30 to 50 feet up, and drifted directly overhead. The windows were open. There was no sound. Finally the lights fell back and split apart, one to the northeast, one to the southeast. Project Blue Book never explained them.

Context

September 1965. The United States was in the middle of a large wave of UFO reports, and earlier that month Exeter, New Hampshire had produced one of the best known sightings of the decade. Far to the southwest, in the corner of New Mexico just east of the Arizona line, US Highway 80 runs past the small village of Rodeo. Mountain ranges rise on either side. At night the road is long and dark.
