January 15, 1933. A winter evening in Banneux, a hamlet south-east of Liège. Eleven-year-old Mariette Beco looked out of the kitchen window and saw a beautiful lady standing in the garden. She was luminous. She wore a white gown and a blue sash. Her feet were bare in the snow. She beckoned. Mariette's mother locked the door. Over the next 47 days the Lady returned seven more times. She called herself the Virgin of the Poor. She led the girl to a spring in a roadside ditch. Onlookers gathered. Only Mariette ever saw her.
