A hamlet in the municipality of Sprimont, about 15 km south-east of Liège. In 1933 a working-class girl named Mariette Beco reported visions of the Virgin here, in the case known as Our Lady of Banneux, the Virgin of the Poor. Belgium was then in the grip of an apparition wave, with claims at Onkerzele, Lokeren, Tubize and elsewhere. Of them all, only Banneux and Beauraing won Church recognition. The Chapel of the Apparitions opened on August 15, 1933, and the sanctuary now draws 400,000 to 600,000 pilgrims a year. Léonie Van den Dijck of Onkerzele had visited before her own visions.
