August 1965. A wooded road north of Monroe, Michigan. Night. Christine Van Acker, 17, was at the wheel. Her mother sat beside her. Then something came up out of the roadside ditch. It stood seven feet tall, covered in black, bristly hair tipped with silver. A hairy arm reached through the open window and seized Christine by the hair. The car stalled. Both screamed, and the horn kept sounding until the thing slipped back into the woods. Days later, a photograph of Christine's black eye ran in newspapers across the country. Polygraphs, monster hunters and a gorilla costume followed. The story never went away.
Monroe County, Michigan. Summer 1965. Something was walking the woods at night. Officers at the Michigan State Police Flat Rock Post had been hearing about its nocturnal wanderings since June. One local family said they had seen the creature about 15 times in two months: seven feet tall, five feet wide, about 500 pounds, and grunting like a mad dog.
