Context
Lockeridge is a small village in Wiltshire, England. It sits on the edge of the West Woods, about 2.9 miles west of Marlborough. From 1964 into the 1970s, Warminster and Cley Hill drew skywatchers from across the country. Marlborough itself produced reports of static orange orbs in July 1997 and a car-sized tubular object in September 1999. In 2005, BBC Wiltshire ran a reader page called Moonraking: Spooky Stuff: UFOs, where local people shared what they had seen.
The sighting
21 June 2005. The summer solstice. It was evening, but still broad daylight. A man was cycling near Lockeridge. Over a wheat field, he saw three "white metallic craft."
They hovered above the field. Then, the witness said, they made "random trails" down the hillside. Whether he meant the craft moved along the slope or left visible trails behind them is not clear from the accounts that survive. He watched for "three or four minutes."
No size, no lights and no sound were recorded. No beings. Only the craft, the field and the hill.
The witness
He came away certain. "I have no doubt whatsoever that we are being visited by other levels of intelligence." He never gave his name, his age or his job. The same BBC Wiltshire page carried another comment, from someone who said they had video of "strange light formations" over Atworth in April 2005. That clip has never been found.
Investigation
There is no record of an official inquiry. Searches turned up no Ministry of Defence UFO desk entry for Lockeridge or Marlborough in June 2005, although the files from that period have not been checked item by item. No photograph, radar return or physical trace has been reported. Even the original BBC page has proved hard to retrieve.
Explanations
No source offers a specific explanation for the Lockeridge sighting. Wikipedia's list of Wiltshire events notes, as a general point, that Salisbury Plain has long been used to test experimental aircraft, and that military craft may be mistaken for UFOs. Nobody has tied that remark to this case.
A curious footnote sits in the same Wikipedia entry. That June, three white objects were reported over the east end of Glasgow around midnight. A Baillieston man said he heard "spaceman-esque voices" through his electronic equipment, and Russian Antonov An-30s were proposed as explanations. Wikipedia cites the same BBC Wiltshire page for both events, which may simply be a citation slip. No link between the two has been established.
Legacy
The case survives in a handful of lines. It appears in Wikipedia's article on UFO sightings in the United Kingdom and its list of paranormal events reported in Wiltshire. In 2022, Dave Doyle included it in Wiltshire Live's roundup of the county's most notorious UFO sightings. No books, documentaries or podcasts have taken it up.
What remains is one cyclist, one wheat field and three or four minutes on the longest day of the year. And a man who had no doubt at all.
