Saturday, 24 September 1966. About 5:20 a.m. Officer Richard Koffel stood in the Eagles Home parking lot in Lisbon, Ohio. The sky was full of stars. Then he saw it. A glowing disc-like light, round and flat with a little peak at the top, much bigger than a full moon. It glowed, he said, "like those radium things in a watch." He radioed a deputy ten miles away. "Look east and tell me what you see." The answer came back. "Stars and clouds." The light stayed where it was. It stretched into an elongated teardrop. Then it dimmed as the dawn came up.

Context

1966 was a strange year in Ohio. In April, deputies Dale Spaur and Wilbur Neff chased a glowing object out of Portage County and into Conway, Pennsylvania. The Air Force blamed Venus. Five months later, a police officer in Columbiana County looked east before dawn. His story survives in two local papers, the Salem News and the East Liverpool Review, both printed the same day.
