Wednesday 25 October 1967. A quarter to five in the morning in East Sussex. Policemen in five police cars, spread out around Lewes, Ringmer and Halland, reported the same thing. A bright light, travelling north in total silence. The newspapers called it a flying cross. One motorcycle officer, PC Bryan Cawthorne, pulled over between Ringmer and Halland to get a better look. At first he thought it was a star. Then he lined it up with a telegraph pole, and it was moving. Only a day earlier, two Devon constables had chased a flying cross between Holsworthy and Hatherleigh. Britain was in the middle of a wave.
