July 1976. A secluded stretch of road outside Oakenholt, near Flint in North Wales. Early afternoon. Gaynor Sunderland was out on her bicycle when she looked past a hedge and saw something standing in the field. A silvery, cigar-shaped craft, about 35 feet long, with a dull red box on top. Beside it were two figures. The taller one pointed an L-shaped instrument at the ground. A wavy red beam left cup-sized holes in the earth. Then it turned and stared at her. She did not tell her parents until March 1978. When she did, Jenny Randles and Paul Whetnall built an entire book around her family.

Context

Oakenholt is a village just south-east of Flint, near the A548 in North Wales. In 1976 it lay in the county of Clwyd. Today it is in Flintshire. The Sunderland family lived there, and within a few years their name would fill the pages of Flying Saucer Review. It began with a child on a bicycle.
