October 1921. A short item from London reached the newspapers. "London has a new 'ghost'." The address was 27 Lamb's Conduit Street, Holborn. According to rumour, it took the form of a shadowy woman. She sat with her child on the dark doorstep. Nobody was named as having seen her. It did not seem to matter. For some time, crowds had collected round the house each evening. Most of them were children. No investigation followed, and no one recorded how it ended. What survives is one of the latest in a long line of London ghost crowds, and the picture of a woman and child, still and silent, on a doorstep in the dark.

Context

Lamb's Conduit Street runs through Holborn, in central London. By 1921 it already had a history with the unseen. On 3 June 1871 the medium Agnes Guppy was allegedly carried from her home in Highbury to a séance table in this street. Spiritualists, including Arthur Conan Doyle, called it genuine, and sceptics called it a hoax. Fifty years on, a 1921 magazine still described the street as "the residence of another notorious medium".
