Cookley triangle sighting

June 2006 · Lea Lane, near Cookley, Worcestershire, England, United Kingdom
20Thinly documented UAP Triangle 24 sources

June 2006. An evening drive home along Lea Lane, heading towards Cookley in Worcestershire. Two people in the same car saw something in the sky. A triangle. Shiny. Silver. It hovered just 5 to 10 metres above the ground, moving along the horizon. And it made no sound at all. That is almost everything known. The account surfaced fourteen years later, in a single uncited edit to Wikipedia's list of UFO sightings in the United Kingdom, made on 29 June 2020 by an account used only that day. No newspaper report, no official log and no named witness has ever been found. The Cookley Triangle remains a quiet entry with a citation needed tag, still waiting for someone to come forward.

Context

Cookley is a village in Wyre Forest district, north of Kidderminster, in Worcestershire. Lea Lane runs through it, past the primary school and the medical centre. Nearby lie the former Lea Castle estate and the A449 road between Kidderminster and Wolverhampton.

The region had seen its share of strange skies. In 2003, newspapers reported triangular objects over Worcester. Four years later, the "Dudley Dorito" drew calls from readers describing a silent triangle in the evening sky.

The sighting

June 2006, on an evening whose exact day is not recorded. Two people were driving home along Lea Lane, travelling towards Cookley. Then they saw it, a shiny, silver, triangular object. It hovered low, about 5 to 10 metres above the ground, moving along the horizon. It was completely silent, a point the account stresses twice.

No lights were described. No size. No duration. No beings, no landing, no effect on the witnesses. Just a silver triangle hanging low over a lane in Worcestershire.

How the story surfaced

Here the trail grows thin. The only account of the sighting appeared on 29 June 2020, in a 456-byte edit to the Wikipedia article "UFO sightings in the United Kingdom." The editor, an account named AdamLench, made five edits that afternoon, all to that article, and none on any other day. The first carried the summary "addition of sighting in June 2006." The rest were small tidy-ups.

That pattern could point to a witness, or someone close to one, recording their own experience. It remains unverified, and the username is not a known witness name. By November 2020 the line carried a citation needed tag. Mirrors copied it, and one, Kiddle, gave it a name. The Cookley Triangle.

The search for corroboration

No newspaper report has been found, and no UFO database lists the case. The Ministry of Defence did publish its UFO reports for 2006, and The National Archives holds a file, DEFE 24/2082, covering March to September of that year. Neither has yet been checked for a June entry from Cookley. A 2007 Express & Star summary of Midlands reports to the Ministry of Defence named Walsall, Oldbury, Dudley and others. Cookley was not among them in the part that could be read.

A separate Cookley claim does exist. In 2009, Col Foster, a MUFON member from Wordsley, said his favourite UFO pictures were taken in Cookley and showed an object close to a helicopter. There was no triangle, and no 2006 date.

Explanations

Nobody has offered an explanation for this case. For the wider family of black triangle reports, the Ministry of Defence study Project Condign put most down to buoyant plasmas. For something silver, silent and very low, a foil balloon or a kite would be obvious candidates to consider. None has been published as a finding, and none has been tested against the account.

Legacy

The Cookley Triangle is a story with almost nothing around it. Two unnamed witnesses. One evening. One edit, fourteen years on. It sits in the record unexplained and unchallenged, still waiting for its witnesses to speak.
