Wednesday, October 13, 2010. Early afternoon in Chelsea. People on West 23rd Street stopped and looked up. High in a clear blue sky hung about a dozen silvery, balloon-like dots. They hovered. They drifted. They seemed to shift around one another. One witness said it looked like a jellyfish made of lights. Crowds stood still for two blocks, phones came out, and calls poured into the NYPD and the FAA. Radar showed nothing out of the ordinary. Within days a school in Mount Vernon said the objects were its runaway party balloons. Not everyone on the sidewalk was convinced.

Context

Stanley A. Fulham, described as a retired Air Force officer, had made a prediction. In the third edition of his book Challenges of Change, he wrote that 13 October 2010 would bring "a massive UFO display over the world's principal cities." Few people in Manhattan had heard of it.
