Context
March 1958. The Algerian War was under way. In the Sud Constantinois, a small French Foreign Legion outpost at Bouahmama kept watch through the night. It was dug into the ground and lightly armed. A single telephone line connected it to the main camp. The place is probably the town of Bouhmama in the Aurès region, though no source confirms it. One sentry stood alone. A Legionnaire with three years of service, later identified only by the initials N.G. Another sentry kept watch at the far end of the camp.
