June 24, 1967. San Juan's Eve in Argentina, and twenty years to the day after Kenneth Arnold's famous sighting. Shortly after 10 pm, from Zárate to Misiones, people looked up and saw it. A bright head with a long white trail. A large leading light. Behind it, a silent single-file train of about fifteen smaller ones, their luminosity shifting as they crossed the sky. At Oberá, some two thousand people at the festival watched for five minutes. An airliner crew saw it. A bus stewardess near Tucumán saw it. Over Asunción, six objects flew in formation. The Air Force collected testimony. The only published answer was a meteor, offered without certainty.

Context

Saturday, June 24, 1967. San Juan's Eve. Across northern Argentina, people were outdoors for the traditional festivities. It was also the 20th anniversary of Kenneth Arnold's 1947 sighting, and Revista Panorama later described hundreds of "creyentes" watching the sky in hope of an appearance to mark the date. Shortly after 10 pm, they got one.
