Octopus giganteus

Term 3 stories, 1896 to 2003

A giant octopus, named from a carcass. In 1896 the St. Augustine Monster came ashore on Anastasia Island, Florida. Webb wrote to Harvard, and the letter reached A. E. Verrill at Yale, who judged it a true octopus of colossal size. February 1897. Verrill gave it a name, Octopus giganteus. The idea returned in 1988 with the Bermuda Blob at Mangrove Bay, which scientists found remarkably similar apart from its smaller mass. In 2003 it surfaced again over the Chilean Blob on Pinuno Beach, Los Muermos, alongside the hypothesis of part of a whale.
