flying saucers

Term 3 stories, 1942 to 1947

A term born in 1947. Pilot Kenneth Arnold described objects that flew like a saucer skipped across water, and on June 26 the Chicago Sun headline called them flying saucers. At least 800 copycat reports followed within weeks. In 1950 Arnold told Edward R. Murrow on CBS that he had described how they flew, not their shape. Before then the word did not exist. The Welles Bridge object of 1942 was taken for a parachute, and the Robertson Panel said the foo fighters of 1943 to 1945 would have been labeled flying saucers had the term been popular.
