A historian of the Chesapeake Bay's own sea monster. In 2024 Eric A. Cheezum published Chessie: A Cultural History of the Chesapeake Bay Sea Monster with Johns Hopkins University Press. The book opens on the Virginia side of the Potomac, in the summer of 1978. Cheezum ties the run of sightings, including the 1980 fishing trip off Smith Point, to rapid cultural transition on the bay. On Robert Frew's 1982 videotape at Love Point, he observes that owning a video camera on the Eastern Shore was then nearly as rare as the monster itself.
