A monastery on the River Shannon, south of Athlone. St Ciarán founded it in 544. In the middle of the eighth century, Irish annals recorded a wonder in the sky above it, dated variously from 743 to 749. The story is told in The Airship of Clonmacnoise. During Mass, an anchor dropped from a ship overhead and caught in the church. A crewman swam down to free it, and the congregation held him fast until he was released. Clonmacnoise is later named beside the ship seen over Redbourn by the monks of St Albans in 1254.
