For one week in January 1909 the Jersey Devil was everywhere. Hoofprints on rooftops, a creature on a Philadelphia trolley line, mills and schools closed, posses in the Pine Barrens. A month later Maryland had its own winged terror, the Snallygaster, in the same newspapers.
