Woodenbong, New South Wales. A small town at the foot of the ranges on the Queensland border. Late 1976. At about 1 a.m., Thelma Crewe looked out of her kitchen window and saw two hairy creatures about five feet tall in her yard. About ten months later, Jean Maloney woke at 2:30 a.m. to her terrier yelping. She switched on the yard light. A creature more than six feet tall sat on its haunches, her dog crushed against its chest. It stood. It looked straight up at her. Then it dropped the dog and backed away to the grape trellis, grunting. In the morning there were footprints beside the house.

Context

Woodenbong sits at the foot of the ranges on the New South Wales and Queensland border, about 60 km northwest of Kyogle. Today it calls itself the centre of "Yowie Country". The yowie is Australia's Bigfoot. In the 1970s, two women in town said they had seen one from a few feet away.
