Vernon, Normandy. The night of 22 to 23 August 1954. About one in the morning. Bernard Miserey, 25, had just put his car away on the south bank of the Seine. Above the far bank hung something enormous. A luminous cigar, standing on end, perhaps a hundred meters long. Completely silent. Then a disc dropped from its lower end. It fell, tipped over, and dove across the river toward him, flaring brighter. Four more followed over three quarters of an hour. Two police officers on patrol reported an elongated luminous shape that same night. The Vernon cigar opened the great French wave of 1954. No one has ever offered a specific explanation.

Context

Summer 1954. Vernon is a town on the Seine in Normandy, about 65 km north-west of Paris. On the heights above it sat the LRBA, a military rocket laboratory founded in 1946 and staffed partly by former German V-2 specialists.
