Windermere. February 11, 2011. Morning mist on the water. Two colleagues on a team-building weekend had paddled their kayaks out from the shore near Bowness. Then Tom Pickles saw something moving. At first he thought it was a dog. Then he realised it was much bigger. Humps. Three or four of them, rippling, dark, with skin like a seal's. It was swimming fast, throwing up a wave. Sarah Harrington watched it for about 20 seconds. Then the two of them paddled straight back to shore. Pickles had raised his camera phone. Within days his picture was in the papers, and the creature known as Bownessie had its portrait. Whether it showed a monster, a tyre or something else is still argued over.
