14 June 1981. Trinity Sunday. In a meadow called Prado Nuevo, outside El Escorial, Luz Amparo Cuevas felt drawn toward an ash tree beside a fountain. Those with her noticed an intense aroma of roses and incense. A white cottony cloud came out of the tree. Amparo fell to her knees on a granite rock and stayed rigid for around half an hour. She said she saw the Virgin of Sorrows, surrounded by angels, asking for a chapel on that spot. Over the next two decades she reported hundreds of apparitions. Pilgrims came by the thousands. The Church found nothing supernatural. The courts got involved. And in 2020 the chapel was demolished.
Luz Amparo Cuevas Arteseros was born on 13 March 1931 in Pesebre, in Peñascosa, Albacete. By some accounts her experiences began before the famous day. A "preliminary manifestation" is dated to October 1980. Her followers list earlier apparitions in 1981 on 19 March, 1 May and 10 May.
