Palavas-les-Flots. Just after midnight. 20 May 1981. Four young people from Montpellier were driving home in a Renault 5 when a woman in a white raincoat and a white scarf signalled from the roadside. She was going to Montpellier. She climbed into the back, between the two young women, and said nothing. Less than a kilometre on, a tight bend loomed near the Pont Vert. Suddenly she cried out. "Attention au virage ! Attention au virage !" The driver eased off and took the bend safely. Then the girls began screaming. The seat between them was empty. The doors were closed. The car was still moving. More than forty years later, no one has explained it.

Context

Palavas-les-Flots is a seaside town at the edge of Montpellier, in the Hérault. In May 1981, four young people from Montpellier, aged 17 to 25, spent an evening there. They walked along the quays and had a drink. None of them, the sources say, had any interest in spiritualism. At about 00:30 they set off for home in a Renault 5, two young women in the back and a young man named Thierry beside the driver.

The hitchhiker

Just before the Pont des Quatre-Canaux, on the road to Montpellier, a woman stood at the roadside. She was about fifty, with brown hair, in a white gabardine and a white scarf. Later accounts call her elegant, and pale. She signalled that she was going to Montpellier. She nodded to accept the lift, took the seat between the two young women and did not say a word.

The bend

About a kilometre further on, the road swung into a very tight bend near the Pont Vert. The woman cried out. "Attention au virage ! Attention au virage !" The driver lifted off the accelerator and took the bend safely.

Then the two girls in the back began screaming. The driver turned round. The seat between them was empty. The car was still doing about 90 km/h. All the doors were closed.

Thierry's account in Midi Libre on 28 May 1981 put it simply. She had been shouting a warning about the bend. When they turned round, she had disappeared.

The investigation

Most accounts say the four went straight to the central police station in Montpellier. Others say they gave a statement to the gendarmerie the next day. One version says the officers first laughed, assuming a prank. Each witness was questioned separately, and there were no inconsistencies. A patrol went back to the site with them, but a thorough search found nothing and the inquiry produced no explanation.

The sociologist Jean-Bruno Renard, a specialist in urban legends at Université Montpellier III, later had access to the police report. The sincerity of the statements struck Renard. "La piste d'un canular semble en tout cas à écarter." Vincent Melgoso of the Toulouse-Mirail parapsychology laboratory interviewed two of the four separately and found their accounts consistent. The laboratory's head, Yves Lignon, also took an interest.

Explanations

Collective hallucination was raised at the time, along with alcohol and drugs. Popular accounts say police ruled out alcohol and drugs. Renard proposed something subtler. A real experience, unconsciously shaped by the long-circulating myth of the dame blanche. "Il s'est bien passé quelque chose, mais personne ne pourra jamais dire avec certitude ce que c'était."

Melgoso suggested a "distance interaction". Others see a guardian spirit warning drivers on a dangerous road. The sceptics of the Cercle Zététique du Languedoc-Roussillon examined the case in 1996. Some retellings add that a woman died at the same bend a few months earlier. Nothing has been found to support it. No hoaxer has ever been identified.

Legacy

The four witnesses moved away and no longer answer requests, but the village did not forget. "Cette affaire a profondément marqué le village," says Christian Jeanjean, mayor and local historian, whose grandmother always maintained it was true. Francis Attard, then at Midi Libre, wrote about the case in Au-delà du visible in 1987. Fabrice Colin put it in his Atlas de la France mystérieuse and in a France Bleu radio series narrated by Tom Novembre, and Marianne reopened the file in 2022. The woman of Palavas now stands among the phantom hitchhikers of the world, beside Resurrection Mary of Chicago.
