Marlboro Township, New Jersey. A back yard on Buckley Road, with blue spruce trees, a statue and a crucifix. Here, Joseph S. Januszkiewicz said, the Virgin Mary came to him on the first Sunday evening of every month. He was the only one who claimed to see her. It did not keep anyone away. Word spread through Catholic newsletters and the press. By 1992 thousands were arriving each month to pray the rosary and sing hymns while he dropped to his knees and spoke to an invisible presence. On August 2 that year, the police chief put the crowd at 6,800 to 7,000. Then the Diocese of Trenton opened an investigation. Then a judge banned the vigils.

Context

Joseph S. Januszkiewicz was a draftsman and a Polish immigrant living on Buckley Road in Marlboro Township, Monmouth County, New Jersey. In 1988 he went on pilgrimage to Medjugorje, Yugoslavia. He came home healed. Accounts differ on the ailment: a back injury, hearing loss, or a 1987 accident that had left him using a wheelchair.
