Autumn 1913. A rumour moved through Chicago's 19th Ward. A Devil Baby had been born in the neighbourhood, with cloven hoofs, pointed ears and a tail. It could talk from birth. It swore. And it was being kept at Jane Addams's Hull-House. For about six weeks they came. Mostly women, from every part of the city, from the suburbs, from out of town. Some offered money to see it. Residents turned them away at the door and on the telephone. The Chicago Examiner reported thousands still searching. No one at Hull-House ever saw a baby. Addams said plainly there was none. Then she wrote about why so many needed to believe.
