February 1977. A cool Wednesday night on Smith School Road, four miles west of Flora, Mississippi. Deputy Kenneth Creel and Constable James Luke saw a light they took for an evening star. It kept getting brighter and bigger. Then it was over their car. They radioed for help. About 20 officers answered. Police, sheriff's deputies and highway patrolmen stood beside a cotton field and watched a round, glowing craft hang above it, bright enough to throw their shadows on the ground. Forty-five minutes later it rose and was gone. Creel later said it was all a joke. It is still called the largest mass UFO sighting in Mississippi history.
Flora is a small town in Madison County, Mississippi, about 25 miles north of Jackson. In February 1977 it became the scene of what WLOX would later call "the largest mass UFO sighting in Mississippi history." Most accounts place it on the night of Wednesday, February 9. Several sources give February 10.
