Española, New Mexico. Saturday night, 20 September 2014. Officer Karl Romero was watching the station's security feeds when something crossed the sally port, a fenced and gated vehicle area. At first he took it for a fly or a moth. Then he saw the legs. A blurry, bright white figure, moving across the lot and seemingly through cages and a gate. His supervisors checked. Nobody was there. Officers had long spoken of noises in the night and breath on their necks in the briefing room. Now they had footage. Within days it was on CNN and Fox News. Then the skeptics arrived, with a much smaller suspect in mind. Something crawling on the lens.
Española, New Mexico. Since 2006 the police department had worked out of the same station, and the staff had stories. Strange noises in the middle of the night, unexplainable images in the lobby, officers in the briefing room who felt someone breathing down their necks. The building, KOAT reported, is not on a burial ground, and no inmates have died there. What the station had never produced was a picture.
