Quito. Friday, 20 April 1906. About 8 p.m. The boarders of the Jesuit Colegio San Gabriel are finishing dinner. On the dining hall wall hangs a printed image of Our Lady of Sorrows, her heart pierced by seven daggers. A student named Carlos Hermann looks up. The eyelids are moving. Beside him, Jaime Chávez sees it too. For about 15 minutes the Virgin's eyes open and close, slowly, again and again, like a living person's. The boys call out each blink. Within days the Church opened a formal inquiry, with sworn statements, doctors and scientific experts. Its decree: the event could not be explained by natural causes.
