August 24, 1976. Whitehall, New York. Three teenagers in a pickup spotted a "large human form" standing beside a field off Abair Road. They turned around for a better look. It screamed. Then it ran at the truck. The driver left a measured fifty seven feet of rubber on the road. The next night, police officer Bryan Gosselin caught it in a spotlight, about 35 feet away. Over seven feet tall. Red eyes. It raised its hands, not paws, to cover them. Nineteen-inch tracks turned up near the river. Decades later, the town at the south end of Lake Champlain made Sasquatch its official animal.
Whitehall, New York. A small town at the south end of Lake Champlain, right beside the Vermont border. On its outskirts runs Abair Road, past a field near the Poultney River. Wilfred Gosselin already had reason to wonder about the place. A year earlier, he remembered, an eerie screaming had carried across that same area.
