November 29, 1960. Half past nine at night. Over Taguatinga, a young satellite town of Brasília, storm clouds hid the sky and lightning cut through them. A store owner named Josino Martins Lisboa saw it first. A yellowish fireball, oval in shape, orange with shifting greenish tints. It hung low. It moved in zig-zags, heading toward Anápolis. For fifteen minutes, a small group watched it with the naked eye. Then it was gone. Three minutes later, two jet aircraft crossed the same sky, as if in pursuit. Three witnesses put their names to a statement. It was no optical illusion, they said, and no commonly observed phenomenon. Decades later, Correio Braziliense would return to it as the first UFO appearance recorded in Brasília.
Taguatinga was barely two years old. Founded on 5 June 1958 as a satellite town of Brasília, it sat at the edge of a capital still being built. In November 1960, its residents reported something in the sky. Not once, but three times, on different days, at about the same hour.
