Context
Autumn 1966. Suffolk County, at the eastern end of Long Island, had already lived through a strange year. In the spring, the East End saw a run of reports, about a dozen in six weeks according to a NICAP official. They included a brilliant white light shaped like a torpedo over Napeague, a roaring red saucer at Sag Harbor and two orange saucers clamped together off Montauk. By October, the Air Force at Suffolk County Air Force Base, near Westhampton Beach, said it had recently received many similar calls.
