Saturday, 2 September 1967. Bentilee, a council estate in Stoke-on-Trent. At about 9:15 pm, several residents watched an orange disc with a bright red glowing dome fly low overhead. There was no sound. One witness felt a wind as it passed. Then it seemed to come down in a field about 400 yards away. Mrs Bowen said it changed colours. Red, greenish, blue. A group of boys watched it land behind their houses. Police were called and found nothing. Later, police and others saw a luminous object rise from the field, hover, and vanish in a fraction of a second. No explanation was ever settled. Today the case lives on in archive film, a documentary and a stage play.

Context

Bentilee was built in the 1950s between Hanley and Longton in Stoke-on-Trent. With about 4,500 homes, it was described as the largest council estate in Europe. Open fields lay beside it. September 1967 would bring a run of strange reports across North Staffordshire, and two local amateur astronomers, Roger H. Stanway and Anthony R. Pace of Newchapel Observatory, would record them.

The sighting

Saturday, 2 September 1967. About 9:15 pm. Several residents saw an orange disc with a bright red glowing dome fly low overhead. Nobody heard a sound. One witness felt a wind as it passed. Then it appeared to land in a field about 400 yards away.

Mrs Bowen later told ATV Today what she saw. "It seemed like a saucer, you know. It changed in different colours, a red, a greenish and a blue." The descent shook her. "I did get frightened of it when it dropped."

Her neighbour Mrs Stephenson described a red glow and a craft that landed on open land next to the estate. Four boys, among them Malcolm Bowen, watched it come down in the field behind their houses.

Other voices survive in fragments. "The object started to glow bright red." "We thought the field was on fire." "We couldn't hear a bird."

Police were called. By the time they arrived, the light had gone. They walked the fields and found nothing. Later, police and others saw a luminous object rise from the field. It hovered, then vanished in a fraction of a second.

The watch at 1:30 am

Barbara Ward was woken by her baby, and from her window she saw a very bright yellow object with an orange light on top, shaped like an inverted saucer, on or just above the ground in the next field. Its light seemed to vary in intensity. She heard no sound, and it did not move. She "half imagined" shadowy figures passing in front of it, but could not be sure. After about half an hour, she went back to bed.

Investigation

Stanway, a solicitor, and Pace gathered witness transcripts and published them in February 1968 as Flying Saucer Report: UFOs Unidentified, Undeniable. When the field was examined, no traces were found. In 1969 ATV Today returned to the estate, with presenter Gwyn Richards interviewing the witnesses and both investigators. Stanway said he had taken his findings to the MOD, who confirmed that something happened on the estate that night. No Ministry of Defence file on the case has been found.

Explanations

No hoax has ever been alleged. A 2024 blog post wondered whether the witnesses had seen an instrument package from a satellite, a guess offered without evidence. Two days after Bentilee, students planted fake saucers across southern England in the 1967 British flying saucer hoax, a separate affair. Later retellings turned Ward's uncertain shadows into small human-like figures.

Legacy

A short documentary, Unidentified, appeared in 2022. In 2024 Claybody Theatre staged Bright Lights Over Bentilee, written by Deborah McAndrew and directed by Conrad Nelson, at Spode Works. The theatre speaks of dozens of witnesses and says there has never been a plausible explanation. Like Westall and Ariel School, Bentilee remains a landing seen by children close to home.
