September 1987. A new road was being cut across the hillside above Stocksbridge, near Sheffield. It was not yet open. Shortly after midnight, two security guards saw a ring of children in old-fashioned clothes dancing beneath a pylon. They went over. The children were gone. There were no footprints in the fresh mud. Then a hooded figure stood on the half-built Pearoyd Bridge. The headlights shone straight through it. Days later, two police officers kept watch in their patrol car. Something appeared at the window. The car would not start. Then came the bangs. The Stocksbridge bypass has been called the most haunted road in Britain ever since.

Context

The A616 Stocksbridge bypass runs 7.5 miles from Langsett to Underbank, across the Hunshelf hillside near Sheffield, South Yorkshire. It cost £18m. In September 1987 it was still a construction site, closed to traffic and guarded at night by Constant Security. Workers had already reported strange things. Some heard children singing late at night from the nearby woods. Others saw children on the closed site who could not be found when challenged.
