Context
Stellenbosch sits in the Cape Winelands of South Africa's Western Cape. Just west of the town centre rises Papegaaiberg, "Parrot Mountain", a low hill with the tunnelled cellar of Die Bergkelder at its base. Today it is the Papegaaiberg Nature Reserve, a remnant of renosterveld. In 1991, according to the account, "Papegaaiberg was still covered in dense pine plantations."
The sighting
It began at dusk. The exact date is uncertain. One version says around July 1991. An earlier version says autumn 1991, at around 18:30.
Two independent eyewitnesses saw a red glowing sphere. It came from the south, low on the horizon, drifting in the direction of Papegaaiberg. Then it was gone. One telling says it "disappeared from site behind the hilltop." The other says they lost sight of it above the hill.
No size was reported. No sound. No duration.
The third witness
The night was not over. At around 3:00 the following morning, a third witness saw a sphere rise from Papegaaiberg. The earlier account describes "a white sphere taking off from within the plantation." The later one describes "a glowing sphere seen ascending vertically from Papegaaiberg before being lost from sight."
That witness took the story to Eikestad, the Stellenbosch local paper. An article followed within days. One version says "That Friday." The other says "the following Thursday."
A story without a paper trail
Everything known about the case comes from a short entry on Wikipedia's list of UFO sightings in South Africa. It was first added on 3 March 2021 by an account called Winelander, which made no other edit. The same day, editor Hob Gadling reverted it as unsourced. On 1 September 2026 a temporary account, again with a single edit, restored it in reworded form. There are still no references.
The two versions disagree on the season, on where the sphere vanished, on the colour of the 3:00 sphere and on the day the paper came out. Both read like first-hand recollection. The Eikestad article is the only potential primary document, and it has not been found online. No witness is named. No photograph, film, radar return or physical trace is mentioned, and no official investigation is on record.
Possible explanations
No conventional explanation has been published, but a few mundane candidates are worth testing. Cape Town International Airport lies west of Stellenbosch, and aircraft lights could appear low on the horizon. Planets low in the western evening sky are another possibility. On 17 June 1991, Venus, Jupiter and Mars stood close together in the evening sky. For the climb out of the plantation at 3:00, a lantern, flare or forestry light could fit.
A second red light
The same edits added another report. On 10 June 1991, around 20:00, someone travelling on the R44 towards Stellenbosch described "a glowing red diamond shaped/ lozenge shaped object slowly drifting vertically towards the Southwest horizon" before it disappeared behind the distant hills. That point on the road lies about 5.4 km north-northeast of the Papegaaiberg summit, and a southwest line of sight points roughly toward the hill. It may have been the same object, the same phenomenon on another night, or a blurred memory of dates. Until someone opens the 1991 Eikestad archive, the red sphere of Papegaaiberg stays where it was last seen, just out of sight.
