Context
The R44 carries traffic south into Stellenbosch, through the vineyards and hills of the Cape Winelands. In 1991 South Africa had at least one well documented sighting. In April, a hovering triangle with lights was reported over Baviaanspoort and Eersterust near Pretoria, and Beeld ran four articles on it. The Stellenbosch case has none of that. It lives in a single uncited entry on Wikipedia's list of UFO sightings in South Africa.
The sighting
10 June 1991. Around 20:00. The witnesses were in a vehicle on the R44, driving towards Stellenbosch. The entry pins the spot at 33°53'15.1"S 18°51'02.2"E, roughly 5 km north of the town centre. Then something appeared low in the sky. In the words of the current entry, the eyewitness reports describe "a glowing red diamond shaped/ lozenge shaped object slowly drifting vertically towards the Southwest horizon and then disappearing behind the distant hills."
It was steady. It was slow. And then it was gone. The account gives no size, no sound and no duration. No beings, no landing, no effects on the car.
Two versions of one memory
The story first reached Wikipedia on 3 March 2021, added by an editor called Winelander. That version was different. It put the time at around 20:30. It described "a red glowing object, diamond shaped," seen "on the western horizon by travelers approaching Stellenbosch via the R44." The object travelled in a southern direction before the witnesses lost sight of it behind the hilly terrain. Nine hours later, the editor Hob Gadling removed it with a blunt summary: "remove unsourced stuff".
On 1 September 2026, a temporary account restored the story in its current form. Earlier time. New direction. New motion. Whether one person or several saw it is unclear, though the 2021 text speaks of "the witnesses". The 2021 editor's name, Winelander, and the precise coordinates hint at someone who knew the area well, perhaps a witness. Nothing confirms it.
Explanations
No published commentator has offered an explanation. The leads come from the investigator who compiled this file. The evening sky was busy. Venus reached its greatest eastern elongation on 13 June 1991, 45.4° east of the Sun, an evening star in the west. Around 15 to 17 June, Venus, Mars and Jupiter gathered in a rare tight triple conjunction near the Beehive cluster. On 10 June they were already close together. A bright planet low on the horizon can look red, shimmer into a diamond and sink slowly behind hills. One problem remains. From Stellenbosch, those planets would set in the west-northwest, not the southwest. That fits the 2021 version better.
Another candidate is an aircraft descending towards Cape Town International Airport, roughly 25 km west-southwest of the spot. A single coloured light, drifting down, dropping behind the hills. The Moon is ruled out. New moon fell around 11 to 12 June.
Legacy
The case has no books, no documentaries, no podcasts. Its closest companion is another 1991 entry from the same area: a red glowing sphere drifting low towards Papegaaiberg and lost behind the hilltop. The two may be one memory recorded twice. That entry mentions an article in the local paper. An issue of Eikestad Nuus from mid-1991 remains the best hope of turning a recollection into a record.
