November 25, 1970. A Wednesday night on Old Highway 3 in Nova Scotia. Lawrence Smith and his brother Manus rounded a bend near the Bear Point road. Something was lying across it. A line of reddish-orange lights, each twenty inches across, the right end angled up into the night sky. The tape deck stopped. The engine died. The car slowed to a halt, as if it had plowed headlong into a huge mound of jello. Twenty seconds later, it vanished. That same evening, a Canadian Forces corporal from the Baccaro radar station watched four reddish-orange lights hang in a perfect line over the trees at Smithville. The RCMP filed a five-page report. No conclusion was ever recorded.

Context

Shag Harbour already had a story. On October 4, 1967, witnesses there described four amber lights on a dark object, and local fishing boats went out to search. Lawrence Smith, a Lower Shag Harbour fisherman, captained one of the first two. Three years later, it was his turn again.
