August 1991. The Soviet Union is coming apart. Over the Caspian Sea, a radar station on the Mangyshlak peninsula picks up something enormous. MiG-29 pilots close in over the Aral Sea and see it plainly. A gigantic zeppelin-shaped craft, metallic grey, about 600 m long. It ignores a friend or foe challenge. It zigzags. Then it pulls away and vanishes from radar near Lake Issyk-Kul. Ufologists say it came down in a remote gorge of the Tien Shan. A place called Shaitan Mazar. The Devil's Grave. Expeditions followed in 1991, 1992 and 1998. What they claimed to find there, and what was gone when they came back, turned it into the Russian Roswell.

Context

Late August 1991. A week after a failed coup in Moscow, the Soviet Union was breaking apart. Everything known about what happened next comes from one network: the 1998 write-up by Nikolay Subbotin's RUFORS, the Russian UFO Research Station, drawing on the Perm ufologist Emil Bachurin and the Kazakh group SAKKUFON.

The intercept

04:42. In the RUFORS timeline, a radar station on the Mangyshlak peninsula picked up an object over the Caspian Sea. Kapustin Yar confirmed the track. Two MiG-29 pilots were diverted from a routine mission.

At 05:12 they saw it over the western Aral coast. A "huge dirigible balloon without any outstanding details, dimly shining in the sunlight." About 600 m long. Grey stainless steel, with round portholes in front and green symbols on the tail. A "friend or foe" query got no answer.

The fighters closed in. Between 500 and 600 m, their weapons and electrical systems stopped working. The object made "short zigzag manoeuvres in horizon and vertical", then sped up to about 6,800 km/h. The jets pulled away. Control came back, and they landed safely. At 05:27 the object vanished from radar near Lake Issyk-Kul. Villagers around Karakol reported a huge object coming down in the mountains.

The Devil's Grave

RUFORS placed the wreck in the Shaitan Mazar gorge, near the source of the Sary-Jaz River in the Central Tien Shan. The craft struck a rocky ledge 1,700 m short of its final position. Then it slid across a "quite flat, almost horizontal platform", leaving a track more than 40 m wide. An internal explosion split it into two nearly equal halves. BJ Booth wrote that it "skidded on it's belly for a distance of 5,000 feet before coming to rest."

The expeditions

An October 1991 attempt led by M.S. Eltsin of SAKKUFON searched for two weeks and found nothing. Then came word that the Air Force had found the site. An Mi-8 helicopter was said to have crashed while lifting wreckage from the snow, killing everyone aboard. No independent record of that loss has surfaced.

On 12 June 1992 a SAKKUFON team led by G.G. Svechkov arrived. They said they saw the craft broken in two and sketched its tail markings, but could get no closer than about 800 m. They reported dread, skin burns and failing instruments. A zone with no magnetic field measured 2,230 by 1,700 m. All film came back overexposed. Bachurin said: "You could feel it all around." When Subbotin's group returned in August 1998, the craft and the helicopter were gone. Only the 1992 markers remained.

The debate

No Soviet, Russian, Kazakh or Kyrgyz government document has ever been found, and the pilots and radar operators are never named. Reported times disagree by about 12 hours. Speeds grow to "42,000 miles per hour" in English retellings. A 2021 life.ru account, retold by K-News, adds a volunteer, Aleksey Romanovskiy, who met a giant pilot figure inside the wreck. UFO Casebook raised the possibility of a meteor or asteroid fragment. Booth held firm: "There is too much documentation from independent witnesses to dispute the existence of the UFO."

Legacy

Subbotin's group presented the case as part of a series on the "Russian Roswell". Laurence Mitchell retold it for Bradt Guides in 2019, noting the gorge's older reputation. A sacred stream, said to heal.
