Reus, Tarragona. 13 May 1969. Midday. In the control tower of the military aerodrome, the duty sergeant watched a Boeing 727 climb away towards Düsseldorf. Then he saw something else. A bright, motionless point, just below and to the right of the jet's contrail. Through binoculars it was circular, probably spherical, evenly lit except for elongated yellowish patches. A light aircraft flew towards it and saw nothing. Days later, the young soldiers who had watched from the tower were told it was secret. Talk, and face a court-martial. The file stayed confidential until 1993.
Reus, 1969. The aerodrome between Reus and Constantí, a few kilometres from Tarragona, was a Spanish Air Force base. Today it is Reus Airport. In the tower that spring worked a duty sergeant controller, a relief controller, two Civil Aviation radio mechanics and two soldiers on military service. One of them, it seems, was Gabriel Font. He was 19. He collected flight plans and helped the sergeant.
