March 25, 1968. About 8:15 pm. Kul Prasad Timilsina, 27, was walking home from night school near Pokhara, Nepal. Then the sky lit up with a loud explosion. A blazing object, flashing intermittently, broke apart over the Kaski region with a sound like thunder. The next morning he found a metal disc in a six-foot-deep crater in his field at Batulechaur. He carried it home. For a month it lined his buffalo shed. Then the officials came, and soon the Americans. Project Moon Dust took charge of the fragments. Where they are today, nobody can say.

Context

Spring 1968. Across the Himalaya, people were looking up. Between February and March, the CIA logged reports of strange objects over Ladakh, Sikkim, Bhutan and Nepal. On February 19, villagers at Olangchung Gola and Ghunsa in Taplejung watched something cross the sky from northeast to southwest. In Ladakh, on March 25, observers described a "rocket-like" object with a white-yellow-white trail. That same night, something came down near Pokhara.
