October 1973. Palacios, a Gulf coast town of about 4,000, is playing a high school home football game. In the second quarter, a red light appears over the stadium. It travels for a few seconds. Then it stops dead still, for 15 to 20 seconds. Then it moves on. Mayor W.C. "Bill" Jackson called it "a big red blob." They finished out the quarter, but halftime suffered. Within days the town council answered the sky with a proclamation. Palacios' first annual UFO Fly-In Day, at the municipal airport, 1 to 5 p.m. A small welcoming committee waited. Nothing landed.

Context

October 1973. The United States was deep in a UFO flap. Pascagoula had made headlines on October 11. Reports poured in from Ohio, from the Florida panhandle, from Minnesota. In Texas, FAA tower controllers in San Antonio watched a "flickering, moving red light". Two airline pilots passed within 1,000 ft of it before it moved rapidly away. Police in Brownwood and Mesquite reported glowing lights and a bright flashing object.
