Context
In 1980 Cuapa was a valley settlement of about 100 rural houses in Chontales, under the municipality of Juigalpa. Nicaragua was in the first year of Sandinista rule. Bernardo Martínez had been born there on 29 August 1931. He was a farmer and a tailor. He was also the sacristan who looked after the chapel.
