February 1967. Near Cambridge, an 11-year-old boy named Matthew Manning lived in a house where the ornaments would not stay put. His father found them displaced. Then they were seen to move on their own. Rapping sounded. Doors opened and closed. It faded. It came back. It followed Matthew to Queens House in Linton, and to the dormitory of Oakham School. Beds moved with nobody near them. Pebbles and cutlery flew. Pools of water appeared from nowhere. And in the summer of 1971, 616 signatures in different hands covered the walls of his bedroom. Investigator A.R.G. Owen called it psychokinesis, centred on the boy. Sceptics would later read the same handwriting very differently.

Context

Matthew Manning was born on 17 August 1955. He was 11 when it started. His father, Derek Manning, was an architect with an interest in psychical research. He was the first to notice. What followed was a poltergeist outbreak that came and went for about four and a half years.
