Louviers, Normandy. 1642. Inside a small convent of Franciscan hospitaller sisters, young nuns were seized by possession crises. They leapt. They convulsed. One limb rotated as if fixed to the shoulder by a spring. They spoke of being carried to secret Sabbaths, of a Devil called Dagon, of a cat with fiery eyes. At the centre stood Madeleine Bavent, who named the priests she said had taken her there. The bishop came. The exorcists came. The queen's own physician came. Five years later, a vicar burned alive in the market square at Rouen. Beside him burned the exhumed corpse of the convent's former director.

Context

The Hospitaller Sisters of Saint-Louis and Sainte-Élisabeth were Franciscan tertiaries. Their convent at Louviers, in Normandy, was founded shortly before 1623. Madeleine Bavent, an orphan baptised in Rouen, served there as turn-maid from about 1628.
