A French town. An Ursuline convent founded in 1626, holding 17 nuns with an average age of 25 under their prioress, Jeanne des Anges. The possessions there ended with the priest Urbain Grandier executed in 1634. He had opposed Cardinal Richelieu's demolition of the town's fortifications and written a satire of him. Loudun drew on the Aix-en-Provence precedent of 1609, where a possessed woman's testimony was first accepted, and its profitable pilgrimage trade may have inspired Louviers in 1642. Historians also set the Miracle of Laon beside it. Aldous Huxley retold the story in 1952.
