August 1966. Londonderry, New Hampshire. Near the place where Route 93 meets Route 102, a large red orb hung in the sky. It made no sound. Motorists pulled onto the side of the road to watch. According to the only account that survives, some people kept their eyes on it for a full 20 minutes as it traveled up and down and across the sky in a crazy pattern. Among the witnesses were several residents, a police officer and a reporter for the Derry News. All of them, the account says, described the very same details. No names. No exact date. Just one silent red light over a highway interchange.

Context

New Hampshire was no stranger to strange lights in the 1960s. In September 1961, Betty and Barney Hill reported their encounter in the White Mountains. On September 3, 1965, near Kensington and Exeter, Norman Muscarello and Officer Eugene Bertrand described a silent object with pulsing red lights. In March 1966, NICAP logged another police sighting at Exeter. In June, a glowing object was reported over Mt. Sunapee.
