Paranormal record / 1942
August 1942. Queen Wilhelmina of the Netherlands, living in exile in London, is Franklin D. Roosevelt's guest at the White House. Around midnight, footsteps sound outside her bedroom. Then a knock. She opens the door. A tall, bearded figure stands there in a frock coat and top hat. Abraham Lincoln. In the version told in America, she fainted. In a Dutch account from 1996, she stayed on her feet, the figure vanished before she could say anything, and only the next morning did she realise who it was. Either way, the queen's midnight caller became one of the most retold stories in the long ghost lore of the White House.
