Context
The Aude department, late spring 1995. Fontiès-d'Aude and Trèbes sit a few kilometres apart, just east of Carcassonne, and the case is filed under both names. French Wikipedia and the pop-science site 10h26.com call it Fontiès-d'Aude. A copy of the official file carries the heading "TREBES (11) 1995". The case number is the same, 1995-05-01393, and so is the text. One event, two place names. The witnesses were a couple, a husband and his wife. Their names were never published, as is usual for French official files.
The sighting
One night between May 25 and May 28. About 3:30 a.m. Above their house hung a large dark object. To the couple it could suggest a helicopter. But it was stationary, and it made no sound at all. No smoke. No trail.
For a few minutes it stayed there. Then it lit the ground with beams of light. Not once. Five or six times. The witness later called them searchlights. The couple's dogs, which 10h26.com describes as usually quick to make themselves heard, went into the house and hid. They did not bark. Then the object left at medium speed.
Aftermath
About a week later, the dogs began vomiting and had diarrhoea. The wife had health problems. The husband felt very tired. He saw the vegetation deteriorating where the beams had lit it, and 10h26.com says the lawn dried out. Then a neighbour was suddenly taken to hospital.
Frightened, the husband phoned the Sécurité Civile, France's civil protection service. He wanted to know one thing. Was the sighting connected to what was happening to him, his wife, his neighbour, his dogs and his plants?
Investigation
The case reached SEPRA, the unit of the French space agency CNES that handled unidentified aerospace phenomena. Its successor, GEIPAN, now publishes the file. Its summary is spare: a large object above a house, with supposed effects on the witnesses, the animals and the plants.
The conclusion split the case in two. The investigation could not identify the object. It also found no link at all between the object and the supposed effects. The wife was following a medical treatment, and there was intense heat. The neighbour's hospitalisation was not surprising given his age. And many plants outside the area supposedly lit by the object showed the same decline. GEIPAN filed the case as class D, unidentified despite the available information. That rating covers the object alone.
The debate
No one has accused the couple of a hoax. But not everyone accepts the classification. On 16 February 2012, a user named "Bob Rekin" on the sceptical forum UFO-Scepticisme disputed the D rating. He pointed to the imprecise dates, contradictions between the account and the medical explanations, and the missing causal link. According to that forum, the file was still class D without re-examination as of May 2022.
No conventional explanation for the object itself has been proposed. 10h26.com says investigators ruled out a passing plane or helicopter, which in any case make noise. This remains a small case, known mostly through the GEIPAN archive and the sites that copy it. Yet 10h26.com ranks it among the top ten unexplained French sightings for its physical effects, in the company of other GEIPAN files with alleged effects such as Trans-en-Provence and the Amarante case at Nancy. A dark, silent shape over a house. Still unidentified.
