May 1, 1952. 9:10 in the morning. Clear skies over Davis-Monthan AFB in Tucson, Arizona. On the steps of the base hospital, Air Intelligence Officer Maj. Rudolph Pestalozzi watched a B-36 bomber crossing at about 20,000 feet. Two shiny discs were closing on it from the northeast. They slid into position beside the bomber. They held station for about 20 seconds. Then they peeled away in a sharp, no-radius turn and raced south. The crew demanded to land at once. Pestalozzi filed a bulky report with Project Blue Book. Fourteen years later, it was gone.

Context

Spring 1952. America was entering its greatest wave of flying saucer reports. On May 1, Project Blue Book logged a silver wingless object over Moses Lake, Washington, and five flat-white discs over George AFB, California. Between them came Tucson.
